  • The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), a part of the World Health Organization (WHO), has classified asbestos as a Group 1 carcinogen, indicating that there is sufficient evidence to show that it can cause tumors in humans. Long-term exposure to asbestos can lead to lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, ovarian cancer, and mesothelioma. Contact with asbestos can also cause other diseases such as asbestosis (fibrosis of the lungs), pleural plaques, pleural thickening, and pleural effusion.
